X-ray or fluoroscopically guided injections are considerably more precise and accurate than standard injections. Fluoroscopy is an imaging technology that projects an X-ray picture onto a monitor. It helps Jean Santo, MD, guide the needle precisely into the treatment area.
For pain relief, injections can be more effective than oral medicine because they deliver medication directly to the source of pain. Typically, a steroid/local anesthetic injection delivers a powerful anti-inflammatory solution directly to the involved area. Depending on the type of injection and condition, pain relief may be long-lasting or temporary.
Some physicians feel that injections can be given without X-ray guidance. Dr. Santo believes that this may miss the target and make the injection ineffective because it was not placed in precisely the right area to deliver medication. Some physicians believe that inaccurate injections might account for the broad range of outcomes. These have ranged from 18 percent to 90 percent. This difference may be related to inaccurate placement of medication.
