Radiofrequency is a type of electrical energy used to temporarily interrupt or destroy nerves that transmit pain signals. The medical term for the procedure is radiofrequency ablation, radiofrequency rhizotomy or radiofrequency neurolysis.
Radiofrequency procedures are recommended in certain cases when pain relief from traditional nerve blocks is not long-lasting. An initial nerve block or series of nerve blocks is carried out to identify the source of pain. Occasionally, the pain relief response will be long-lasting. Often, however, the relief is brief. The radiofrequency procedure can often provide longer-lasting results with minimal risk. Radiofrequency procedures can be effective for:
- Sacroiliac joint denervation (hip pain)
- Facet denervation (headaches, neck pain & upper or lower back pain)
- Sympathetic blocks (upper or lower extremity pain)
- Dorsal root ganglion lesions (spinal pain)
- Rib pain
